Who Uses The Web?
The Commerce Net / Neilsen Internet Demographics Survey
paints an excellent picture of users of the World
Wide Web. The survey involved a gross sample of
approximately 280,000 telephone calls, yielding more
then 4,200 completed telephone-based interviews. The
findings of their study gives potential Internet
Marketers a clear view into the age, gender,
profession, education, income, and lifestyle of their
on-line customers. Note that the internet is changing
so rapidly that these figures are now obsolete. But,
from this data we have extrapolated some information
that will help you better understand who uses this
new medium:
Survey Highlights:
|
Over 200,000,000 people in the U.S
and 250,000,000 people worldwide have access
to the Internet. |
Total
Internet usage in North America sustantially
exceeds the total playback of rented video tapes.
|
|
|
200 million people in North
America have used the Internet in the past 3
months for e-mail.
|
|
150 Million people in North America have used the
World Wide Web in the past 3 months.
|
Average
Web users are upscale (25% have income over
$80K), professional, and educated (80% have at
least college degrees). There are some drastic
exceptions to this in specific markets such as
the automotive high performance industry.
|
|
|
Internet
users average 9 hours and 28 minutes per week on
the Internet.
|
Approximately
80 million Web users have purchased products or
services over the Internet in North America
alone. The average purchase is now $427.
|
|
Users of
the Internet are primarily male (66%) . While
males tend to use the Internet with both greater
frequency and duration than females, accounting
for approximately 77% of total usage. When
compared with the SRI International 's study of
Internet users from a few years ago, female usage
of the Internet has grown from 29% to 34%. These
two studies when compared to each other show that
this medium will be non-gender specific within
less than three years. |
|
Access Locations:
|
While
home Internet connections are obviously the place
from which most people access the Web (62%),
there is only a 6% difference to the next access
point which was the work place. The fact that
there was such a high amount of users who access
the Internet from the work place indicated that
companies are using the Internet as a viable
medium for conducting business. The mere fact
that they have the equipment and software to
access the Internet is a strong indicator to
support this. |
Reasons For Using The
Internet:
Accessing
the World Wide Web is the primary reason people use
the Internet (72%). While many people think of the
Internet as simply E-mail, its applications go far
beyond that. The emergence of the World Wide Web has
been the fastest growing most quickly evolving
application spawn on the Internet.

Approximately 60%
of Web users responded that they use the World Wide Web
to "search for information on companies and
organizations." along with using it to browse and
explore. These are Canadian and American professional
level, college graduates, with a earned household incomes
of over $80,000 specifically searching for companies like
yours.
The study
showed that overall usage of both the Internet
and On-line services like "America
On-line" was significant. The average
Canadian and American Internet weekly usage was 5
hours and 28 minutes, compared to On-line
Services at 2 hours and 29 minutes. To better
understand the significance of this the study
compared Internet Usage with viewing of rented
video tapes. The comparison showed that the
weekly time spent using the Internet was equal to
the viewing of rented videotapes in North
America. |
